HIS 2160 - The African American Struggle for Equality Credits: 3 This course focuses on the struggle for African American liberty, justice, and equality from colonization to the present, taking a historical approach to such topics as racism, abolition, Reconstruction, Jim Crow, and the civil rights movement. Students examine legislative, executive, judicial, and grassroots initiatives, including affirmative action, desegregation, criminal justice reform, and the Black Lives Matter movement. The course provides students with opportunities to understand the contested nature of rights in America and reflect on new directions for the future.
