This certificate provides students with foundational knowledge about the impacts of substance abuse on individuals, families, and society. Students learn about a range of substance abuse treatments and services and explore careers in substance abuse fields. Students may use the certificate to enhance degrees in related fields such as Human Services , Social Work, or Criminal Justice .

Program Outcomes


Students who complete the Substance Abuse Services certificate will be able to:

  • understand the range of services that substance abuse professionals provide and identify theories and models of practice in relation to prevention, intervention, treatment, and recovery;
  • describe chemical dependency and its consequences for individual, family and social systems, and co-occurring issues such as mental health, poverty, homelessness, domestic violence, and delinquency;
  • practice effective observation, interpersonal communication and group facilitation techniques, and demonstrate appropriate ethical practices when working with diverse clients; and
  • explore pathways for educational and career development in student’s field of study.
